Resting in Him Saves Us

Turning to Him and resting in Him saves us. It’s one of His promises about rest.

Isaiah 30:15 puts it this way: “Only in returning to me and resting in me will you be saved. In quietness and confidence is your strength.”

When we turn to Him, we draw close to His presence. We stand near enough to lean on Him and for the shadow of His wings to offer us protection. There we can release our burdens, our struggles, our fears, our failures, our sins. We can ask for and receive His forgiveness. We can recover our strength because He is the very source of it. His rescue plan never fails.

His invitation to turn to Him and rest with Him is an open-ended one. But, we must choose to accept it. He won’t force us to rest with or in Him. He simply states the facts of what is in store for us when we do.

Those words from Isaiah were given to the Jewish leaders when they needed monumental help again years AFTER the Lord rescued them from slavery in Egypt. AFTER He provided manna for them in the desert. AFTER He led them into the Promised Land. AFTER He gave them victory again and again in battle after battle.

One would think that the Israelites would remember such a rescue story. I mean we are still talking about it in 2021.

And yet.

Instead of returning to the Lord and resting in Him, the Israelites turned to the Egyptians for help, the very people who enslaved and oppressed them for generations. Seems outrageous in hindsight. But we are no different.

Too often we turn to anything and everyone BUT the Lord for rest and rescue.

And yet. His offer of returning and rest still stands.
